Süüteajastuse refers to the timing of the spark plug ignition in an internal combustion engine. Precise control of this timing is crucial for optimal engine performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions control. The spark plug ignites the air-fuel mixture within the cylinder at a specific moment relative to the piston's position. This moment is typically expressed in degrees before or after Top Dead Center (TDC), which is the uppermost point of the piston's travel.

Advancing the ignition timing means igniting the mixture earlier in the compression stroke, while retarding it means igniting it later. The ideal ignition timing is not constant and varies with engine speed, load, temperature, and fuel quality. At lower engine speeds and loads, the mixture has more time to burn, so ignition can be timed closer to TDC. At higher speeds, the mixture needs to ignite earlier to allow sufficient time for complete combustion before the exhaust stroke begins.

Modern engines utilize sophisticated electronic control units (ECUs) to dynamically adjust süüteajastus. These ECUs receive input from various sensors, such as the crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, manifold absolute pressure sensor, and oxygen sensor, to determine the optimal timing for any given operating condition.
