Süttimisenergia, engl. ignition energy, is the minimum energy input required to start combustion of a flammable mixture. It is most commonly discussed as the minimum ignition energy (MIE). MIE applies to mixtures of flammable gases or vapors in air, and to combustible dust clouds, and is a critical parameter in explosion safety and risk assessment. A mixture with a low MIE can be ignited by relatively weak energy sources, increasing the risk of ignition from static discharge, electrical sparks, or hot surfaces; mixtures with a high MIE require stronger energy sources to ignite.

Measured values vary widely with chemical species, concentration, temperature, pressure, as well as the geometry and energy delivery of the ignition source. Factors such as confinement, humidity, and particle size for dusts can alter the MIE. Tests are performed under standardized laboratory conditions using controlled energy sources (spark discharges, laser pulses, or heated wires) following national or international standards (ISO, EN, ASTM).

Understanding MIE is essential for designing explosion-protected equipment, choosing ignition-source controls, establishing safe operating practices, and performing hazard analyses in process industries. It is related to, but distinct from, autoignition temperature—the temperature at which a substance will ignite without an external energy source.

For safety planning, MIE values are used in dust and gas explosion risk assessments, ventilation design, and in evaluating the effectiveness of inerting strategies. Because MIE depends on many variables, engineers use conservative safety margins and site-specific testing where necessary.
