A synchrotron is a type of cyclic particle accelerator. In a synchrotron, charged particles are accelerated in a constant-radius ring. The particles are guided by magnetic fields that increase in strength as the particles gain energy. Electric fields are used to accelerate the particles, and these fields are synchronized with the increasing energy of the particles, hence the name "synchrotron." Synchrotrons are also used for particle physics experiments to collide beams of high-energy particles, allowing scientists to study the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces that govern them. Due to their size and complexity, synchrotrons are typically large, specialized facilities. They require significant infrastructure and expertise to operate.
