Súhlasy are formal expressions of assent given by a person to permit a specific action or set of actions. In Slovak usage, the word covers agreements, permissions, or permissions granted in various contexts, including law, medicine, data protection, and everyday affairs.

A súhlas is characterized by voluntariness and awareness. It should be a deliberate and informed choice, ideally documented in writing or another reliable form, though it can be verbal or digital depending on the context. In many fields, there are distinctions between different kinds of súhlasy. For example, explicitný súhlas (explicit consent) requires a clear affirmative act, while predpokladaný alebo tacitný súhlas (implicit consent) is inferred from behavior under predefined conditions.

In medicine and research, informovaný súhlas (informed consent) is essential. It entails that the person understands the purpose, risks, benefits, alternatives, and the option to withdraw at any time before agreeing to treatment or participation in a study.

In data protection, the concept is codified by the GDPR. Súhlas so spracúvaním osobných údajov must be freely given, specific, informed, and unambiguous, and the data subject must have the right to withdraw consent easily at any time. Consent must be separate from other terms and not coerced.

Withdrawal of a súhlas ends the ongoing processing or use of the relevant data or action, subject to any legally permissible processing already performed. The rules concerning consent can vary by age and capacity, with additional protections for minors and persons lacking decision-making capacity.
