Sõjaväetsed refers to the military service obligation in Estonia. All Estonian male citizens aged 18 to 60 are generally liable for military service. This service can be carried out in active service, reserve service, or alternative service. The duration of active service is typically 8 to 11 months, depending on the chosen specialization. Following active service, individuals are transferred to the reserve.

The Estonian Defence Forces operate on a system that combines a professional standing army with a large reserve force. This reserve is crucial for Estonia's defense strategy, enabling rapid mobilization in times of need. Citizens who are unwilling or unable to perform military service due to religious or moral reasons may opt for alternative service, which involves civilian duties.

The Ministry of Defence and the Defence Forces are responsible for the administration of conscription. This includes medical examinations, aptitude tests, and assignment to appropriate service roles.
