Sólárbúnað, a term derived from Icelandic, translates to "solar equipment" or "solar apparatus." It encompasses a range of technologies and devices designed to harness the energy of the sun. The primary function of sólarbúnað is to convert solar radiation into usable forms of energy, most commonly electricity or heat.

The most prevalent type of sólarbúnað is solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. These panels are made up of semiconductor materials, typically silicon, which generate an electric current when exposed to sunlight. This direct current (DC) electricity can then be converted into alternating current (AC) for use in homes, businesses, or fed into the electrical grid.

Another significant category is solar thermal sólarbúnað. This type of equipment uses sunlight to heat fluids, such as water or a heat-transfer fluid. Solar water heaters are a common example, providing hot water for domestic use.
