Sínfisis is a type of cartilaginous joint where two bones are joined together by fibrocartilage. This type of joint is characterized by limited movement, providing stability rather than significant flexibility. The term sínfisis originates from the Greek word "symphysis," meaning "a growing together."

A common example of a sínfisis in the human body is the pubic sínfisis, located between the two pubic bones in the pelvis. Another significant sínfisis is the intervertebral sínfisis, which involves the joints between the bodies of adjacent vertebrae in the spinal column. In both these locations, the fibrocartilage acts as a strong, yet slightly yielding, connection. The strength of the sínfisis is often further enhanced by surrounding ligaments. While generally rigid, some degree of movement can occur, particularly in situations like childbirth at the pubic sínfisis, due to hormonal influences. Unlike synovial joints, sínfisis joints lack a joint cavity and are not enclosed by a capsule.
