The term is common in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, where it describes neighborhoods built to house large populations with a focus on affordable, efficient housing. The standard Slovak plural is sídliská, while Czech uses sídliště.

Etymology and scope: The word comes from the verb sídliť in Slovak, meaning to settle or reside, and the suffix -isko or -isko-like forms that denote a place. Sídliská are distinct from traditional city centers or single-family suburbs, representing large, cohesive blocks of flats integrated into a wider urban network.

Architecture and layout: Sídliská are characterized by high-density housing, often in uniform paneláky—prefabricated concrete apartment blocks—built in standardized designs during the mid-20th century. The layouts typically emphasize efficiency and quantity: long residential towers arranged around internal courtyards, with green spaces, playgrounds, schools, shops, and transit connections. Ground-level street life can vary, with some sídliská featuring retail corridors and pedestrian paths, while others emphasize car-oriented design.

History and evolution: Construction surged after World War II and through the socialist era to provide mass housing for industrial workers. After 1989, many flats were privatized, property ownership shifted, and renovation programs expanded. Contemporary sídliská have undergone energy retrofits, facade renovations, and sometimes mixed-use revitalization to improve social and urban amenities.
