Sårsinfektion is the term used in Swedish to describe a wound infection. It occurs when bacteria or other microorganisms enter a break in the skin, such as a cut, scrape, surgical incision, or burn, and begin to multiply. This multiplication can overwhelm the body's natural defenses and lead to a local or systemic inflammatory response.

The signs and symptoms of a sårsinfektion can vary depending on the severity and type of pathogen involved. Commonly observed indicators include increased redness around the wound, swelling, warmth, and pain. The wound may also produce pus or other discharge, and there might be a foul odor. In more serious cases, a sårsinfektion can cause fever, chills, and general malaise. If left untreated, the infection can spread to deeper tissues, leading to complications like cellulitis, abscess formation, or even sepsis, a life-threatening condition.

Risk factors for developing a sårsinfektion include compromised immune systems due to conditions like diabetes or HIV, poor wound care practices, the presence of foreign bodies in the wound, and the type of bacteria present. Certain types of wounds, such as those contaminated with soil or animal bites, are at higher risk.

Prevention of sårsinfektion primarily involves proper wound cleaning and dressing. Thoroughly washing the wound with soap and water, applying an antiseptic if recommended, and covering it with a clean bandage are crucial first steps. Maintaining good hygiene, such as regular hand washing, is also important. Treatment for an established sårsinfektion typically involves antibiotics, which can be topical or oral, to kill the infecting bacteria. In some cases, surgical debridement to remove dead tissue and pus may be necessary.
