This feedback mechanism allows the system to correct for external disturbances and internal variations, leading to greater accuracy and stability. A common example is a thermostat controlling room temperature; it measures the current temperature and adjusts the heater or cooler accordingly.

Further classifications within these broad categories exist, such as proportional (P), integral (I), and derivative (D) control. Proportional control adjusts the output in proportion to the error. Integral control considers the accumulated error over time, helping to eliminate steady-state errors. Derivative control anticipates future errors based on the rate of change of the error, improving responsiveness. Often, these are combined into PID controllers, offering a versatile and widely used control strategy. Other types include adaptive control, which adjusts its parameters over time, and fuzzy logic control, which uses linguistic rules to make decisions.
