Säätöteoriat, or control theories, is a field of engineering and mathematics that deals with the behavior of dynamical systems with inputs, and how their behavior is modified by feedback. The primary goal of control theory is to design a controller that influences a system's behavior in a desired way. This often involves ensuring stability, achieving desired performance, and rejecting disturbances.

Control theory is broadly divided into two main categories: classical control theory and modern control theory. Classical control theory, developed primarily in the early to mid-20th century, typically deals with single-input, single-output (SISO) systems and utilizes frequency-domain analysis techniques such as Bode plots and Nyquist plots. State-space representation is a key concept in modern control theory, which allows for the analysis and design of multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) systems. This approach uses vector and matrix mathematics to describe the system's internal state.

Key concepts within control theory include stability, which refers to the system's ability to return to an equilibrium state after being perturbed; controllability, which concerns whether all desired states of the system can be reached from the initial state; and observability, which relates to whether the internal state of the system can be inferred from its outputs. Control strategies can be open-loop, where the control action is independent of the system's output, or closed-loop (feedback control), where the control action is a function of the system's output, allowing for error correction and adaptation to changing conditions. Applications of control theory are widespread, found in everything from industrial automation and robotics to aerospace, automotive systems, and even biological and economic systems.
