Säätyasema refers to a person's social standing or status within a stratified society. Historically, this was a crucial concept in many cultures, particularly in pre-modern Finland and other parts of Europe. Social status was often determined by birth, occupation, wealth, and legal rights. In Finland, the society was traditionally divided into estates, or säätyjä, with distinct privileges and obligations. These estates typically included the clergy (papisto), nobility (aatelisto), bourgeoisie (porvaristo), and peasantry (talonpojat).
