Säkerhetsrådet is the Swedish term for the United Nations Security Council. This principal organ of the United Nations is charged with the maintenance of international peace and security. It is one of the six principal organs of the UN, established by the UN Charter in 1945. The Security Council has the unique power to make binding decisions, known as resolutions, that member states are obligated to implement.

The Council is composed of fifteen members. Five of these are permanent members, each with veto power: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The remaining ten members are non-permanent, elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms. The presidency of the Security Council is held by each of the members in turn for one month, following a system of rotation.

The primary functions of the Säkerhetsrådet include investigating disputes or situations that might lead to international friction, recommending methods of adjustment or terms of settlement, and determining the existence of a threat to the peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression and recommending action. It can also authorize the use of force in certain circumstances. The Säkerhetsrådet plays a crucial role in global diplomacy and conflict resolution, often through its peacekeeping operations and sanctions. Its decisions and actions are closely watched as indicators of the international community's response to crises.
