Säilytystasoja refers to storage levels or tiers used in data management and computer systems. These levels are distinguished by factors such as access speed, cost, and capacity. The primary goal of implementing storage tiers is to optimize storage resources by matching data requirements to the appropriate storage medium.

Typically, storage tiers are organized from fastest and most expensive to slowest and cheapest. The highest tier, often referred to as tier 0 or tier 1, consists of solid-state drives (SSDs) or other high-performance storage. This tier is used for frequently accessed data that requires immediate retrieval, such as active databases or operating system files.

The next tier down, tier 2, might use a combination of SSDs and faster hard disk drives (HDDs). This level is suitable for data that is accessed regularly but not as critically as tier 1 data. Archival data or less frequently accessed files would be placed in lower tiers.

Lower tiers, such as tier 3 or tier 4, utilize slower and more cost-effective storage solutions like high-capacity HDDs or even tape libraries. These tiers are ideal for long-term archival, backups, or data that is rarely accessed but must be retained for compliance or historical purposes.

The process of moving data between these tiers is known as data tiering or storage tiering. This can be managed manually by administrators or automatically by software that analyzes data access patterns and migrates data accordingly. Effective storage tiering helps organizations reduce costs, improve performance, and manage their data lifecycle efficiently.
