Säieteoria, also known as string theory, is a theoretical framework in physics that proposes fundamental constituents of the universe are not point-like particles but rather one-dimensional vibrating strings. These strings are thought to exist at the Planck length, an extremely small scale. The different ways these strings vibrate are believed to determine the properties of the particles we observe, such as their mass and charge.

One of the primary motivations for säieteoria is its potential to unify quantum mechanics and general relativity, two pillars of modern physics that are currently incompatible in describing extreme conditions like those found in black holes or the early universe. Säieteoria naturally incorporates gravity, suggesting that one of the vibrational modes of the string corresponds to the graviton, the hypothetical particle mediating the gravitational force.

The theory requires extra spatial dimensions beyond the familiar three dimensions of space and one of time. These additional dimensions are hypothesized to be compactified, meaning they are curled up to an extremely small size and are therefore not directly observable. Different versions of string theory exist, such as Type I, Type IIA, Type IIB, and heterotic string theories, along with M-theory, which is believed to unify these different string theories.
