Sähköresonanssi, often translated as electrical resonance, is a phenomenon that occurs in an electrical circuit containing inductance and capacitance when the inductive reactance and capacitive reactance are equal in magnitude. At this specific frequency, known as the resonant frequency, the circuit exhibits a maximum or minimum impedance, depending on whether the circuit is a series or parallel resonant circuit.

In a series resonant circuit, the impedance is at its minimum at the resonant frequency, leading to a maximum current flow. This is because the inductive and capacitive reactances cancel each other out, leaving only the resistance of the circuit. Conversely, in a parallel resonant circuit, the impedance is at its maximum at the resonant frequency, resulting in a minimum current flow from the source but a large circulating current between the inductor and capacitor.

The resonant frequency (f_r) for a simple LC circuit can be calculated using the formula f_r = 1 / (2π√(LC)), where L is the inductance in henries and C is the capacitance in farads. Electrical resonance is a fundamental principle used in various electronic applications, including tuning circuits in radios and televisions, oscillators, filters, and impedance matching networks. The sharpness of the resonance, or the range of frequencies over which resonance occurs, is determined by the quality factor (Q) of the circuit. A higher Q factor indicates a narrower and sharper resonance peak.
