Sávstruktúra refers to the band structure of a solid material, which describes the range of energy levels that electrons can occupy within that material. This concept is fundamental to understanding the electrical, optical, and magnetic properties of solids. In a solid, the discrete energy levels of individual atoms broaden into continuous bands due to the interaction between a large number of atoms.

The sávstruktúra is typically divided into valence bands and conduction bands, separated by a forbidden energy gap. Electrons in the valence band are bound to individual atoms, while electrons in the conduction band are free to move throughout the material. The size of the energy gap determines whether a material is a conductor, semiconductor, or insulator.

In conductors, the valence band and conduction band overlap, or the conduction band is only partially filled, allowing electrons to move freely with minimal energy input. Insulators have a large energy gap between the valence and conduction bands, requiring a significant amount of energy to excite electrons into the conduction band. Semiconductors have an energy gap of intermediate size, meaning they can conduct electricity under certain conditions, such as when exposed to heat or light, or when impurities are added.

The shape and arrangement of these bands, along with the distribution of electrons within them, dictate how a material interacts with electromagnetic radiation and how it conducts electricity. This understanding is crucial for designing electronic devices, optoelectronic components, and advanced materials.
