Szótagolás, in linguistics, refers to the process of dividing words into syllables. A syllable is a unit of pronunciation having one vowel sound, with or without surrounding consonants, that forms the whole or a part of a word. In Hungarian, szótagolás follows specific rules, often based on phonetic principles rather than strict orthographic ones.

The basic structure of a syllable generally involves a vowel, which is the core, and can be preceded or followed by consonants. Hungarian syllable structure tends to be relatively simple, often CV (consonant-vowel) or CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant). Diphthongs and long vowels are treated as single vowel sounds within a syllable. Clusters of consonants at the beginning or end of a syllable are also subject to certain restrictions.

When dividing words into syllables, the general tendency is to keep as much of the word as possible with the preceding syllable's onset, or to attach consonants to the following vowel.
