Szívódás is a Hungarian term that translates to absorption in English. In a biological context, it refers to the process by which substances are taken into the body, typically through the walls of the digestive tract. This is a fundamental process for life, as it allows for the uptake of nutrients, water, and electrolytes essential for bodily functions.

The primary site of absorption in humans is the small intestine. Its structure is highly adapted for this purpose, featuring a large surface area due to the presence of folds, villi, and microvilli. Different nutrients are absorbed through various mechanisms, including passive diffusion, facilitated diffusion, and active transport. For instance, water and small lipid-soluble molecules can cross the intestinal lining by passive diffusion, moving from an area of high concentration to low concentration.
