Szénnemesség is a Hungarian term that translates to "carbon neutrality" in English. It refers to a state where the net amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere is zero. This goal is achieved by balancing carbon emissions with carbon removal or sequestration.

Achieving szénnemesség involves a dual approach. Firstly, it requires significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon dioxide, which is a primary driver of climate change. This reduction is typically pursued through transitioning to renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, improving energy efficiency in buildings and industries, and adopting sustainable transportation methods. Secondly, it involves actively removing existing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This can be accomplished through natural processes such as reforestation and afforestation, which enhance carbon sinks, or through technological solutions like carbon capture and storage (CCS).

Many countries and organizations have set targets for achieving carbon neutrality within specific timeframes, often by the middle of the 21st century.
