Szerszámanyagok refer to materials used in the manufacturing of tools. The selection of the appropriate material is crucial for a tool's performance, durability, and cost-effectiveness. Different applications require different material properties, such as hardness, toughness, wear resistance, and heat resistance.

Commonly used tool materials include various types of steel, such as high-speed steel (HSS), carbon tool steel, and alloy tool steel. High-speed steels are known for their ability to retain hardness at high temperatures, making them ideal for cutting tools used in high-speed machining. Carbon tool steels are simpler and less expensive but can be prone to softening at elevated temperatures. Alloy tool steels offer a balance of properties, often incorporating elements like chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium to enhance hardness, toughness, and wear resistance.

Beyond steel, other materials are employed for specific tooling needs. Carbide materials, particularly tungsten carbide, are exceptionally hard and wear-resistant, making them suitable for cutting inserts, dies, and punches that experience significant abrasive wear. Ceramics, such as alumina and silicon nitride, offer even higher hardness and heat resistance, used in high-temperature machining and specialized cutting applications. Diamond, the hardest known material, is used for ultra-hard cutting tools and abrasives, particularly for machining very hard or abrasive materials.

Polymers and composites are also increasingly utilized for tooling, especially in prototyping and low-volume production. These materials are lighter, easier to shape, and can be more cost-effective for certain applications. The ongoing development of advanced materials continues to expand the possibilities for tool design and manufacturing.
