Wastewater can originate from various sources, including domestic households (sewage), industrial processes, and agricultural runoff. Domestic sewage contains organic matter, nutrients, pathogens, and chemicals. Industrial wastewater can have a wide range of contaminants depending on the specific industry, often including heavy metals, toxic substances, and high temperatures. Agricultural runoff may contain pesticides, fertilizers, and animal waste.

The collection of wastewater is typically done through a network of underground pipes called sewers. These sewers transport the wastewater to a treatment facility. Wastewater treatment involves several stages designed to remove pollutants. Preliminary treatment removes large solids and grit. Primary treatment allows solid organic matter to settle out as sludge. Secondary treatment uses biological processes, where microorganisms break down dissolved organic pollutants. Tertiary treatment, or advanced treatment, further refines the water by removing specific pollutants like nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) or pathogens, often through chemical or physical processes.

Treated wastewater, also known as effluent, is then either discharged into surface waters like rivers or lakes, or it can be reused for non-potable purposes such as irrigation or industrial cooling. The sludge generated during treatment also requires careful management, often involving dewatering, digestion, and disposal or beneficial reuse as fertilizer.
