Szemhéjptózis, also known as ptosis, is a medical condition characterized by the drooping of the upper eyelid. This drooping can occur in one or both eyes and can range in severity from a mild drooping that is barely noticeable to a significant obstruction of vision.

The causes of ptosis are varied. Congenital ptosis is present at birth, often due to improper development of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle, which is responsible for lifting the eyelid. Acquired ptosis can develop later in life due to several factors, including aging, which can weaken the eyelid muscles; neurological conditions such as myasthenia gravis, Horner's syndrome, or stroke; injury to the eye or eyelid; or as a side effect of eye surgery.

Symptoms of ptosis can include a reduced field of vision, especially in the upper part. People with ptosis may tilt their head back or raise their eyebrows to try to see better. In children, severe ptosis can lead to amblyopia, or "lazy eye," if it significantly interferes with vision development.

Diagnosis of ptosis involves a physical examination by a medical professional, often an ophthalmologist. They will assess the degree of drooping, check for underlying causes, and evaluate vision. Treatment depends on the cause and severity. For mild cases, no treatment may be necessary. In more severe cases or when vision is affected, surgery may be recommended to lift the eyelid and restore normal function. The surgical procedure aims to tighten or reattach the muscles responsible for lifting the eyelid.
