A szedvállalkozó (Hungarian for "independent contractor" or "freelancer") is a person who works independently of a company, providing services on a contractual basis. Unlike employees, szedvállalkozók are not bound by an employment contract; instead, they typically enter into service agreements that outline the scope of work, compensation, and timelines. They are responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and social security contributions, operating as self-employed entities.

The term originated in the Hungarian language during the 1990s, in response to economic liberalization and the growing demand for flexible labor arrangements in the post-socialist economy. Szedvállalkozó law was codified in Hungary in the early 2000s, establishing a legal framework that governs contract terms, rights, and obligations. Regulations protect both parties against excessive risk: the contracting company cannot discharge the contractor from duties, while the contractor must provide quality work and meet contractual deadlines.

Typical sectors for szedvállalkozók include IT and software development, design, marketing, consulting, and construction. Many professionals choose this arrangement to diversify income, maintain autonomy, and pursue multiple clients simultaneously. However, the lack of employee benefits such as paid leave, health insurance, and pension accrual can be a drawback. Hungarian legislation allows szedvállalkozók to join collective bargaining agreements with sectors such as media or education, gaining limited protections.

In recent years, the gig economy has expanded the scope of szedvállalkozó roles, and digital platforms facilitate matching between freelancers and clients globally. Nevertheless, regulatory discussions continue around ensuring fair taxation, social security coverage, and preventing abuse of the independent contractor classification.
