Syvävesiviljelyssä, known in English as deep-water culture (DWC), is a hydroponic method where plant roots are suspended in a nutrient-rich water solution. In a typical DWC system, plants are placed in net pots that sit in a lid covering a reservoir. The roots hang down directly into the water, allowing for consistent access to nutrients and oxygen. Oxygen is crucial for root health and is usually supplied by an air pump and air stone, which continuously bubble air into the nutrient solution. This method promotes rapid plant growth because the roots have immediate access to all the necessary elements for development.

DWC systems can be relatively simple or quite complex. A basic setup might involve a single container, while larger commercial operations often use multiple interconnected reservoirs. The nutrient solution needs to be monitored regularly for pH and nutrient levels, and it may require occasional replacement to prevent imbalances or the buildup of pathogens. The constant supply of oxygen and nutrients makes DWC ideal for leafy greens like lettuce and herbs, which tend to have faster growth cycles. It is also effective for fruiting plants, though they may require more robust support structures as they mature. DWC is a popular choice for both hobbyist growers and commercial hydroponic farms due to its efficiency and the rapid growth rates it can achieve.
