A subset of the deep web is the dark web, which is intentionally hidden and requires specialized software, such as Tor (The Onion Router), to access. The dark web is characterized by anonymity and encryption, which can be used for both illicit activities like illegal marketplaces and for legitimate purposes such as secure communication for journalists or whistleblowers in oppressive regimes. It is important to differentiate between the deep web, which is simply unindexed content, and the dark web, which is a deliberately concealed portion of the internet. Accessing the dark web carries inherent risks due to the nature of its users and content.
