Syvyysterävyys, a Finnish term, translates to "depth of field" in English and refers to the range of distances in front of and behind a focused subject that appears acceptably sharp in a photograph or other optical image. It is a fundamental concept in photography, cinematography, and microscopy.

The depth of field is influenced by several factors. The aperture of the lens, also known as the f-stop, plays a significant role. A wider aperture (smaller f-number) results in a shallower depth of field, meaning only a narrow zone is in focus, effectively isolating the subject. Conversely, a narrower aperture (larger f-number) produces a greater depth of field, keeping more of the scene sharp from foreground to background.

The focal length of the lens also affects depth of field. Longer focal lengths tend to produce shallower depths of field compared to shorter focal lengths at the same aperture and subject distance. The distance between the camera and the subject is another crucial factor. As the subject moves closer to the camera, the depth of field decreases.
