Synsprøve is a vision examination used to assess how well a person sees and to detect eye conditions. The test is typically carried out by optometrists, ophthalmologists, or other trained clinicians and can be part of routine health checks, school screenings, or specific referrals.

A standard synsprøve includes several elements: assessing visual acuity with a Snellen chart or equivalent; refractive assessment to determine eyeglass or contact lens prescription, often using a phoropter or autorefractor followed by subjective refinement; evaluation of binocular vision and eye movements (cover tests, near and far alignment); and testing color vision. Depending on symptoms and age, clinicians may also measure intraocular pressure to screen for glaucoma and perform a dilated examination of the retina and optic nerve using ophthalmoscopy or slit-lamp examination.

Process and outcomes: The patient’s history is reviewed, and the clinician explains findings. If a refractive error is found, corrective lenses may be prescribed. If signs of eye disease are detected, treatment is discussed and a referral to a specialist is made. Some synsprøver may include additional tests such as automated visual field testing to assess peripheral vision.

Frequency: In many countries, adults are advised to have a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years, depending on age, risk factors, and vision needs. Children typically begin screening early, with more frequent checks during school years. Individuals with symptoms such as sudden vision change, eye pain, persistent headaches, or double vision should seek prompt evaluation.
