A synintyg, or vision certificate, is a medical document that confirms an individual’s visual abilities at the time of examination. It is commonly used to document whether a person meets the visual requirements for activities and roles that depend on sight, most notably for applying for or renewing a driving license, but also for certain occupations, education, or safety-sensitive tasks.

A typical synintyg describes the tester’s findings from a comprehensive eye examination. It usually includes measurements of visual acuity with and without correction, information about refractive error (spherical and cylindrical components), and notes on binocular vision and the functioning of the visual system. Depending on local rules, it may also report results from visual field testing, color vision assessment, and ocular health. The certificate may specify recommended corrections (glasses or contact lenses) or restrictions (driving with corrective lenses, limitations on certain activities).

Issuance and validity vary by jurisdiction. The document is typically issued by a licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist after the exam and is intended to reflect the wearer’s vision at the time of testing. The certificate is usually valid for a defined period, after which re-evaluation is required, particularly if vision changes or if it relates to ongoing eligibility for a license or job.
