Synfältstörningen, often referred to as a visual field defect, describes an anomaly in a person's field of vision. This means that certain areas within the normal range of sight are either missing, distorted, or appear as blind spots. The field of vision is the entire area that a person can see when their eyes are fixed in one direction. Disturbances can range from minor blind spots that go unnoticed to significant obstructions that impair daily activities.

Causes of synfältstörning are diverse and can be related to the eye itself, the optic nerve, or the brain. Conditions affecting the retina, such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, or macular degeneration, can lead to specific patterns of visual field loss. Damage to the optic nerve, often due to increased intraocular pressure in glaucoma or optic neuritis, can also result in defects. Furthermore, neurological issues affecting the visual pathways in the brain, including strokes, tumors, or traumatic brain injuries, are common culprits.

Symptoms vary widely depending on the location and severity of the defect. Some individuals may experience a gradual narrowing of their peripheral vision, making it difficult to see objects to the side. Others might notice a central blind spot, impacting their ability to read or recognize faces. Flashing lights or persistent shadows can also be reported. Diagnosis typically involves visual field testing, such as perimetry, which maps out the field of vision and identifies any areas of reduced sensitivity or absence of sight. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and aims to manage the condition and preserve any remaining vision.
