Symptomfrihet refers to the state in which a person does not experience the symptoms that are characteristic of a disease or medical condition. In Swedish medical contexts, symptomfrihet is used to describe this status. It is commonly pursued as a treatment goal in both acute illnesses and chronic diseases, and is frequently used as an endpoint in clinical care and research. It does not necessarily equate to a cure or the complete absence of disease; underlying pathology or organ damage may persist even when symptoms have resolved, and symptoms can recur.

Definition and measurement: The criteria for symptomfrihet vary by condition. It may be defined as the absence of targeted symptoms for a defined period, as reported by the patient, and may be corroborated by clinical examination or laboratory tests. In cancer, for example, complete remission often corresponds to no detectable cancer cells and no symptoms; in autoimmune diseases, clinical remission denotes absence of disease-related symptoms despite ongoing background immune activity in some cases.

Context and interpretation: Achieving symptomfrihet can improve quality of life and functional status, but it may be temporary, and relapse is possible. In some diseases, symptomfrihet is contingent on ongoing treatment or maintenance therapy. Patient perception, cultural factors, and reporting bias can influence assessment.
