Symbolsto is a standardized framework for encoding, storing, and exchanging symbolic representations across mathematics, linguistics, music notation, and diagrammatic notation. It provides a compact schema and a serialization format designed to support interoperability, provenance, and extensibility.

The concept emerged in digital humanities and knowledge representation discourse. Proposed by a cross-disciplinary collaboration in the late 2010s, symbolsto aims to address fragmentation among domain-specific symbol vocabularies and to enable machine-actionable symbol data.

Core to symbolsto is a graph-based data model centered on four constructs: Symbol, Attribute, Relation, and Provenance. Each Symbol has a unique identifier, a canonical label, optional aliases, and a set of attributes such as notation, scope, and typology. Relations express connections between symbols, for example "is-a", "part-of", or "equivalent-to". Provenance records the source, creator, timestamp, and confidence. Serialization uses JSON-LD or RDF-like triples to enable linked data workflows.

Key features include multilingual labeling, extensible attribute types, versioning for symbol definitions, validation hooks, and tooling for import, export, and transformation. It supports both inline notation and external resources to describe symbol semantics, enabling applications from text annotation to computational reasoning.

Typical workflows involve curating symbol collections in a central repository, annotating symbols with context, exporting in JSON-LD, and integrating into digital editions or educational platforms. Toolchains may include validators, editors, and converters that bridge Symbolsto with established standards such as RDF vocabularies and Unicode.

As of now, Symbolsto remains an emerging framework with limited but growing adoption. Advocates highlight improved interoperability and richer symbol metadata, while critics point to complexity and the need for broad community governance and documentation.
