Sykehusregistre, or hospital registries, are systematic collections of health data maintained within hospitals. They cover patient demographics, diagnoses, procedures, outcomes, length of stay, complications, and resource use. Registrene can be organized around a disease area, a procedure, or a hospital unit, and may include data from several hospitals.

Their main purpose is to support quality improvement, clinical governance, and research. By standardising data and enabling benchmarking, sykehusregistre help identify variations in care, monitor safety, and inform planning and policy. They may feed national registers and influence reimbursement and service development.

Data sources include electronic health records, administrative systems, laboratory, imaging, and pharmacy data. Registrene may collect information prospectively or extract it from existing systems, and are often built around procedures, diagnoses, or specific conditions.

Governance and privacy are central. Registry use requires legal or ethical approvals, adherence to data protection regulations, and access control through data-sharing agreements. Data are usually pseudonymised or anonymised for research and public reporting.

In Norway, hospital registries contribute to the national health information infrastructure, including the Norwegian Patient Registry and clinical quality registries. Challenges include data quality and interoperability, but benefits include better evidence for clinical decisions and health system planning.
