A sykefraværsperiode, meaning a period of sickness absence, refers to the duration an employee is away from work due to illness. In Norway, this concept is regulated by the Working Environment Act (Arbeidsmiljøloven) and is crucial for understanding employee rights and employer responsibilities.

When an employee becomes sick, they are generally entitled to continued pay from their employer during a certain period, known as the "arbeidsgiverperiode" or employer period. This period typically lasts for 16 calendar days, starting from the first day of absence. During this time, the employer is responsible for paying 100% of the employee's salary.

If the sickness absence continues beyond the employer period, the employee can apply for sickness benefits (sykepenger) from the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV). To receive these benefits, the employee usually needs to provide a doctor's certificate (sykemelding) to their employer, who then forwards it to NAV. There are also waiting days before NAV benefits commence, but these are often covered by the employer's period.

The total duration of sykefravær that can be compensated through NAV benefits is typically up to 52 weeks. This period can be extended in certain specific circumstances, such as for rehabilitation or occupational injury. Both employees and employers have obligations related to managing sykefravær, including communication, follow-up, and facilitating a return to work when possible. The aim of these regulations is to ensure employees receive necessary support during illness while also encouraging a swift and healthy return to the workplace.
