The heart pumps oxygenated blood to the lungs, where gas exchange occurs. In the lungs, carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled, and oxygen diffuses from the alveoli into the blood to be transported throughout the body. The rate and depth of breathing are modulated to match the oxygen needs and carbon dioxide levels in the blood. Similarly, heart rate and stroke volume (the amount of blood pumped per beat) are adjusted to deliver blood efficiently.

This regulation is primarily controlled by the autonomic nervous system, with the brainstem playing a crucial role. Chemoreceptors in the brain and major arteries monitor blood levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and pH. Baroreceptors in blood vessels detect changes in blood pressure. These sensory inputs trigger reflex responses that alter heart rate, breathing patterns, and blood vessel diameter, thereby optimizing cardiopulmonary function.
