Sydämenlaajennushoitoa, known in English as cardiac catheterization or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), is a medical procedure used to treat narrowed or blocked coronary arteries. These arteries supply blood to the heart muscle, and blockages can lead to conditions like angina or heart attack. The procedure is performed by a cardiologist and involves inserting a thin, flexible tube called a catheter into a blood vessel, usually in the groin or arm. The catheter is then guided through the circulatory system to the heart.

Once the catheter reaches the affected coronary artery, a special dye is injected to visualize the blockage using X-ray imaging. Following this, a balloon-tipped catheter is advanced to the narrowed area. The balloon is then inflated, compressing the plaque against the artery wall and widening the passage.
