Swimlaneja, or swim lanes, are a diagramming construct used to organize steps in a process by the actor or organizational unit responsible for each step. The term comes from the visual appearance of lanes in a swimming pool, which divide activities by participant.

In a swimlane diagram, the drawing area is divided into lanes that run horizontally or vertically. Each lane represents a participant—such as a department, role, system, or external partner—and steps are placed in the lane of the performer. In BPMN, these structures appear as pools and lanes.

Purpose is to clarify responsibilities, reduce handoff ambiguity, and improve process understanding. They are used in business process modeling, workflow design, and value stream mapping, often alongside standard flowchart symbols or BPMN.

Benefits include clearer accountability, easier identification of bottlenecks, and better communication of process boundaries. Limitations include potential clutter with many lanes, the need for consistent naming, and the fact that swimlanes do not capture data ownership or accountability beyond process steps; they do not replace a formal RACI matrix.

Design considerations: limit the number of lanes to keep diagrams readable; keep lanes consistently sized; group related steps; and use sub-lanes or subprocesses for complex processes. Indicate handoffs clearly when steps move from one lane to another.
