suurympyrällä is a Finnish term that translates to "on the great circle" in English. It refers to the shortest distance between two points on the surface of a sphere. This shortest path lies along a great circle, which is a circle on the sphere whose center coincides with the center of the sphere itself.

In practical applications, understanding suurympyrällä is crucial for navigation, particularly in aviation and maritime contexts. Airplanes and ships often plot their courses along great circles to minimize travel distance and fuel consumption. This is because a straight line on a flat map projection, like a Mercator map, does not represent the shortest route on the curved surface of the Earth.

The concept is mathematically defined by spherical geometry.
