Suurgruppe is a term that appears in several languages as a compound meaning “large group.” It combines a word for “big” with a word for “group” and is used in everyday language as well as in some academic or translation contexts. In practice, the term is not a single, formal technical category with strict criteria, but a descriptive label for a sizeable segment of a population or audience.

In social science and market research, suurgruppe can refer to a large, cohesive segment that shares certain attributes such as age, income, occupation, ethnicity, or cultural characteristics. Researchers may use the concept to discuss how this segment behaves, responds to policies, or reacts to products and messages. Because it is a broad, non-technical label, the exact boundaries of a suurgruppe are often context-dependent and defined by the aims of a study rather than by universal criteria.

Linguistic and regional variations exist. In Estonian and related Finnic languages, the basic idea is simply “large group,” and orthographic forms may differ (for example, suurgrupp or similar variants in bilingual texts). In multilingual documents, the spelling may reflect loan forms such as the German-style “Suurgruppe.” The term is generally eclipsed in technical writing by more precise categories (demographic, socioeconomic, or market segments) but remains common in informal usage and translation.
