A function f from a set A to a set B is called a surjection if for every element y in the codomain B, there exists at least one element x in the domain A such that f(x) = y. In simpler terms, every element in the target set B is mapped to by at least one element from the source set A. This means that the range of the function f is exactly equal to its codomain B.

The concept of surjectivity is often contrasted with injectivity (one-to-one functions) and bijectivity (functions that are both injective and surjective). If a function is surjective, it means that no element in the codomain is "left out" or unmapped. For finite sets, surjectivity implies that the size of the domain must be greater than or equal to the size of the codomain.
