Supraventricular is a medical term referring to anything located above the ventricles of the heart. The ventricles are the two lower chambers of the heart that pump blood out to the body and lungs. Therefore, supraventricular structures are those situated in the upper part of the heart. This typically includes the atria, which are the two upper chambers that receive blood returning to the heart, and the sinoatrial (SA) node and atrioventricular (AV) node, which are crucial components of the heart's electrical conduction system.

The term is most commonly used in the context of heart rhythm disorders, known as supraventricular arrhythmias. These are abnormal heart rhythms that originate from the atria or the AV node, rather than from the ventricles themselves. Examples of supraventricular arrhythmias include atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). These conditions can cause a range of symptoms, from no noticeable effects to palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, and in some cases, more serious complications.
