supraesophageal
Supraesophageal refers to the portion of the nervous system located above the esophagus in certain invertebrates, most notably arthropods such as insects and crustaceans. It is commonly used to describe the supraesophageal ganglion, the brain-like mass that sits above the entering esophagus and coordinates sensory processing and behavior. In many species, the esophagus runs through the cerebral region, while motor control for the mouthparts and some body segments is handled by the nearby subesophageal ganglion below the esophagus.
The supraesophageal ganglion is connected to the subesophageal ganglion by circumesophageal connectives that wrap around the
Functions attributed to the supraesophageal ganglion include the integration of visual, olfactory, and mechanosensory information, coordination
