Superlatiivia is a hypothetical linguistic term created to describe a class of constructions in which a language forms a double or nested superlative to express an extreme degree of a property. The term is a neologism used mainly in theoretical discussions and worldbuilding contexts, and it is not widely attested as a standard category in established grammars.

Definition and scope

In the concept of superlatiivia, a degree expression combines an ordinary superlative with an additional intensifying element that itself carries superlative force. This can appear in two broad patterns: (1) morphological or syntactic stacking, where two superlative markers or their equivalents appear in sequence on the same adjective or noun phrase, and (2) phrasal composition, where a superlative modifier is joined with another intense modifier to yield an extreme reading such as “the most very tall” or “the most ancientest city” in a hypothetical language.

The double-marking can be realized analytically (two separate words or particles) or synthetically (a single affix encoding the nested degree).
