The sungrebe, scientific name Podilymbus gigas, was a species of flightless grebe endemic to Lake Atitlán in Guatemala. It was a large grebe, weighing up to 1.8 kg (4 lb) and measuring up to 48 cm (19 in) in length. Its plumage was dark brown or black with a distinctive white bill and a white eye ring. The sungrebe was a diving bird, feeding primarily on fish and crustaceans. It was known for its shy and reclusive nature, preferring to stay near the dense aquatic vegetation at the lake's edge.
