Sunadapted is an informal term used to describe organisms, tissues, or behaviors that are well suited to high solar exposure and bright light. It contrasts with shade-adapted types and can refer to structural, physiological, or behavioral traits that improve performance under sunny conditions. The concept is descriptive, encompassing acclimation within a lifetime as well as evolutionary adaptation over generations.

In plants, sun-adapted or heliophytic species typically possess traits that maximize photosynthesis in full sun while limiting water loss. Common adaptations include thicker cuticles, waxy leaf surfaces, smaller or tougher leaves, and leaf orientation that optimizes light capture. They may also show higher photosynthetic capacity, greater stomatal regulation, and changes in pigment composition to cope with high light and heat.

In animals, sun adaptation often involves behavioral patterns such as daytime activity during cooler periods, use of shade, and thermal tolerance. Morphological traits may include darker pigmentation for UV protection and efficient heat dissipation. Among microbes and marine organisms, photoprotective pigments and DNA repair mechanisms help withstand ultraviolet stress in sunlit environments.

Examples include many desert and Mediterranean plants, sun-loving grasses, and several desert-dwelling animals. The term remains informal and descriptive, not a formal taxonomic category. It is used in ecology, horticulture, and agriculture to compare responses to sunlight and to guide management and breeding for sunny climates.
