sulfataatioon
Sulfataatio is a chemical process where a sulfate group (SO4^2-) is attached to a molecule. This often involves the addition of a sulfur trioxide (SO3) molecule, which then reacts with the substrate, typically an alcohol or phenol, to form a sulfate ester. This process can occur naturally or be induced synthetically. In biological systems, sulfation is a common post-translational modification of proteins and a way to detoxify and eliminate various compounds from the body. Enzymes called sulfotransferases catalyze these reactions, using a sulfate donor molecule like 3'-phosphoadenosine-5'-phosphosulfate (PAPS).
In industrial chemistry, sulfataatio is used in various applications, including the production of detergents and surfactants.
