Sujumisessa is a Finnish term used in geotechnical engineering and construction to describe settlement or subsidence of soils and structures under load. The form sujumisessa is the inessive case, indicating “in the process of subsidence” or “during subsidence.” In practice, the term covers both immediate elastic settlements and longer-term, time-dependent movements.

Settlement occurs when soils compress or rearrange under applied forces or due to changes in moisture and pore pressure. Primary consolidation results from dissipation of excess pore water under load, while secondary consolidation, or creep, continues slowly over time. The amount and rate of sujuminen depend on soil type, moisture content, drainage conditions, and the magnitude and duration of loading. Clay-rich and organic soils typically exhibit larger and longer-lasting settlement than dense granular soils.

Sujumisessa can arise in various contexts, including construction of buildings and infrastructure, excavation, changes in groundwater levels, drainage projects, frost action, and mining activities. Differential settlement, where different parts of a structure settle at different rates, poses the main risk to structural integrity and can lead to cracking, tilting, or functional problems.

Assessment and management involve geotechnical investigations, settlement calculations, and monitoring during and after construction. Design approaches to mitigate sujuminen include choosing appropriate foundation types (such as piles or deep foundations), controlling load distribution, improving or draining problematic soils, and planning for permissible amounts of settlement within service requirements.
