Suihkumoottori, also known as a jet engine, is a type of reaction engine that discharges a fast-moving jet of fluid to generate thrust. This thrust is used to propel an aircraft forward. The fundamental principle behind a jet engine's operation is Newton's third law of motion, which states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

A typical turbojet engine, a common type of jet engine, consists of several key components. The intake draws in ambient air. This air is then compressed by a compressor, increasing its pressure and temperature. The compressed air then mixes with fuel in the combustion chamber, where the mixture is ignited. The resulting hot, high-pressure gases expand rapidly and are forced through a turbine, which drives the compressor. Finally, the gases are expelled at high velocity through the nozzle at the rear of the engine, creating the propulsive thrust.

Different types of jet engines exist, including turbofans, turboprops, and ramjets, each with variations in their design and operating principles. Turbofan engines, for example, use a large fan at the front to bypass a significant portion of the air around the core engine, improving fuel efficiency and reducing noise. Ramjets are simpler engines that rely on the forward motion of the vehicle to compress the incoming air and are typically used for high-speed applications. Jet engines are crucial for modern aviation, powering everything from commercial airliners to military fighter jets.
