A turboprop is a type of gas-turbine engine in which a gas generator drives a propeller through a reduction gearbox. In operation, air is compressed, fuel is burned, and hot gases expand through turbines. Part of the turbine energy powers the compressor, while a power turbine drives the propeller via the gearbox. The exhaust gases exit the engine, contributing a small amount of jet thrust. The propeller speed is reduced to an efficient level by the gearbox, allowing a compact, lightweight powerplant suited to aircraft.

Because propellers are most efficient at lower speeds, turboprops are favored for regional airliners, cargo planes, and utility aircraft that operate at moderate cruise speeds and on shorter routes. They typically offer good takeoff performance, strong climb capability, and the ability to operate from shorter or rough airfields. Overall fuel burn per passenger can be competitive with regional jets on appropriate routes.

Limitations include greater noise and vibration levels compared with modern jets, lower top speeds, and the complexity and cost of the reduction gearbox and power-turbine systems. Maintenance can be more involved than for piston or pure jet engines, and some operators face higher propeller and gearbox wear concerns.

Common examples of turboprop aircraft include regional airliners such as the ATR 42/72 family and the Bombardier Dash 8 (Q400), Beechcraft King Air family, and military or cargo types like the C-27J Spartan. The technology emerged in the mid-20th century and remains a mainstay of regional aviation, valued for efficiency on short routes and in operations requiring good field performance.
