Suhtluslülitid, often translated as communication switches or networking switches, are essential devices in modern computer networks. Their primary function is to connect multiple devices within a local area network (LAN) and intelligently forward data packets between them. Unlike older hubs which simply broadcast data to all connected devices, switches learn the MAC addresses of the devices connected to their ports. This allows them to direct traffic only to the intended recipient, significantly improving network efficiency and reducing unnecessary traffic congestion.

When a data packet arrives at a switch, it examines the destination MAC address. Using its internal MAC address table, the switch determines which port the destination device is connected to and forwards the packet accordingly. This process is known as MAC address learning. Switches operate at the data link layer (Layer 2) of the OSI model. Different types of switches exist, including unmanaged switches, which are plug-and-play and require no configuration, and managed switches, which offer advanced features like VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks), Quality of Service (QoS), and port mirroring, allowing for greater control and customization of network traffic. The widespread adoption of switches has been a key factor in the growth and performance of both home and enterprise networks.
